Mobile Technology at HITEC 2016

HITEC has the distinction of being the world’s largest hospitality technology conference. It began in the early ‘70s, when the Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals sponsored the first-ever International Hospitality Conference, which over the years evolved into the HITEC we know today. Back then, electronic cash registers and property management systems were the height of innovation, promising faster transactions and more efficient record-keeping.

The show has come a long way since then. It’s now an invaluable voice in the field of hospitality tech, and it’s instrumental in connecting vendors and industry leaders with hotel owners, managers, and front-line employees.

Set against the vibrant, old-world backdrop of New Orleans, this year’s edition promises an abundance of new insights and innovation. We’ve rounded up some of the talks that will be most relevant to hoteliers looking to implement — or upgrade — mobile technology on their properties.

Disruption in the Digital Marketplace
2:30-4:00 p.m.
Now that travellers have so many options for booking trips, it can be difficult for hotels to adapt to the changing travel landscape. Mobile has become a significant method for research and booking. This super session covers various disruptive models in the marketplace and coaches hoteliers in how best to understand and adapt to these changes.

Engagement vs. Communications: What are the Best Solutions?
11:00-11:15 a.m.
Communication is integral to guest engagement, but the reverse isn’t necessarily true. Just as one can hear without truly listening, communicating with your guests doesn’t guarantee they’ll be engaged. As we’ve covered in our blog, engagement is about “staying in touch with the guest before, during, and after their visit. It’s about nurturing relationships between the guest and the brand, while also encouraging repeat visits and brand advocacy.” This flash talk covers the differences between engagement and communication, and highlights strategies you can use to get your guests truly engaged.

Chatbots Dominating the Future of Travel
2:00-2:15 p.m.
Chatbots are gaining prominence in the hospitality industry. They offer hoteliers the possibility of cutting service costs, increasing profits, and streamlining their operations. In this flash talk, learn how chatbots are influencing the industry and the trends we can expect to see in the coming years.

Guest Facing Technology
4:00-5:30 p.m.
Today’s guest has certain expectations about the service they receive when they stay at a hotel, and technology is a big part of that. Many hoteliers, however, are unsure what technologies to choose and how to go about implementing them. This super session outlines the tech guests are most likely to embrace and how hotels can seamlessly integrate it into their properties.

Robotics in Hospitality: The Future or Just a Gimmick?!
4:00-5:00 p.m.
The use of bots and AI in hospitality is an issue we’ve covered before on our blog, and our stance is clear: bots have a role to play in hospitality, but they can’t replace the need for genuine human interaction. Nevertheless, opinion varies within the industry, and this super session delves into the complexities of robot design and the ethical issues surrounding the possibility of a robotic future.

Opposites Attract: Bridging Generational Divides
9:00-10:30 a.m.
As millennials become an ever-growing presence in the workforce, employers are grappling with how to meet their unique needs. The same goes for hoteliers looking to attract mobile-savvy, always-connected millennials to their properties. In this super session, discover unique strategies that will drive success in working with and marketing to every generation, from Boomers to Generation X to millennials.
